Last week one of our AmeriCorps Vista Volunteers, Jesse Hunt was able to visit Mrs. Deschaine’s 8th-grade class and lead them in a design challenge. What was the challenge you ask? It was, ” How might we design a weather station of the future?”
How did the young scientists put on the design role? They used a process called Design Thinking created by IDEO. In following this process students were able to feel empathy for meteorologists and then design tools for them, they also discussed how the average community member may use weather information and the tools that may help them out on a daily basis.
After a quick brainstorm session students were able to form teams around the best ideas and then create prototypes of new solutions. Jesse was impressed with each students ability to make ideas happen in real life, and quickly form collaborative groups. These students were able to present novel solutions to the challenge at hand. Showing their ability to solve real-world problems and apply what they had learned earlier this semester.
