It was all hands on deck for Salmon Public Library this Wednesday as we ushered in our first Summer Reading Program with a whopping 50+ kids! The energy, buzz, excitement could be felt as a Universe of Stories got unveiled. Francesca & Idaho Commission for Libraries – ICfL Summer Intern Erin Barrett expertly crafted two different activities on the topic of STARS to keep all ages engaged.
Erin worked with the PreK youth and Mrs Marii’s participating class from Kids Creek Early Education Center in the children’s section to construct constellation mobiles, while library staff member Francesca livened up the large meeting exposing kids to knowledge about UV radiation.
A great activity inspired by Lunar and Planetary Institute the participants took to the sun with their pipe cleaner representatives trying to see if their UV beaded body parts changed color in the sun. “Ms Francesca, my beads with sunscreen on them aren’t changing colors!” Hmm let’s explore why!
or “How come my beads change color even though I put clothes on my person?”, “Let’s take a look, are you clothes covering the beads?”
Fantastic opportunities for inquiry based learning from curious little minds. We love the opportunity to encourage wonder!
Special thanks to library board member Joan Geary Smith for engaging with her own curiosity in both groups of youth. And Barb Fisher of Lemhi’s After School Promise for feeding everyone before the program.
See you next Wednesday July 17th for another Universe of Stories!
