[Aug 10th] Astronomy Program – Meteors

August 8, 2023 By Salmon Library Staff Leave a Comment

Astronomy Program #3

Timed with the peak of the summer’s most prolific meteor shower, this is your chance to see a meteor. The Perseid meteor shower peaks August 11-12 this year, giving you a very good chance to catch a shooting star! As the sun sets and the night sky darkens, this presentation, will give you a better understanding of where shooting stars (meteors) come from as well as a chance to actually handle one of these extraterrestrial visitors.

August is also the best month to look directly into the heart of the Milky Way as it dominates the southern sky. Learn about the different types of galaxies, which type our Milky Way is, and where we fit in the neighborhood. After the talk, step outside for a hands-on experience with a large telescope, where you can observe actual galaxies in real-time. Prepare to be astounded as you soak in photons of light that left their stellar source millions of years ago, only to arrive to your eyes on this special night.
