Eat, Play, Grow, Week 2 Recap: “Go, Slow, Whoa”

Summer of Code Week 2 Recap: “What’s For Dinner?”
With 18 lines of code, we’ve already seen so much progress in a short time. If they stick with it, they’ll be designing websites, applications, & games in no time!
We ended with a creative project of “What’s For Dinner?” We saw lots of great examples of meals on plates, using the tools we’ve gained so far, regarding shapes and colors. Here are some more highlights!
Eat Play Grow Week 1 Recap: “My Five Senses”
Week 1: My Five Senses, saw an amazing turnout. With 25+ children strewn about blankets in the park with parents and caretakers on-looking, we explored the boundaries of Taste, Touch, Smell, Hearing, and Sight in what was a huge successful week 1. The fun didn’t stop there as Marii took to the main section of the park to incorporate sing-alongs to Ring Around the Rosie, Marching, Yoga, and even a little bunny hop. There were smiles, laughter, and excitement that was a symbiotic relationship between ring leader and crowd. Getting fully involved in everything from question and answer to starting the charge when it came to dancing, the energy was abundant. All the families left with a children’s book associated with My Five Sense’s courtesy of the grant provided by Idaho Commission for Libraries.
In next week’s session we’ll be exploring how to recognize foods that are the better choices for a healthy body using the “Go, Slow, Whoa” principle. As always all participating families will receive a book in association with the session.
We were also happy to receive Kim Olsen’s of Lemhi After School Promise, Summer Food Program. Perfectly timed after finishing up in the park, a free meal was provided to any of the children involved or that wanted to join at the park from our greater community.

A Commitment to Code
This is where Summer of Code comes in. This is the beginning of a journey to expose younger patrons to a world that will inevitably wait them. It’s on what side of that line do they want to wait, the one where objects, symbols, and strings of letters make sense, or where they simply are magic. The few brave patrons that signed the “Commitment to Code” a pledge to program for 2 hours per week during this six week course are getting first hand knowledge at a potential future vocation that will ensure a greater understanding and perhaps peak an interest at pursuing this further.
On a first day of a bit of confusion getting everyone logged in and signed up we as a group made it through our first challenges. Snowman were drawn, hands were created, objects where produced, all from the hands of these patrons, all with no prior knowledge of computer code. Thanks to the wonderful free education software provided by Khan Academy we mustered through the beginnings and our voyage has become. There will be troubled seas as well as calm waters ahead, but the pursuit is what matters for these young minds. It’s the “Wow, this is so cool! I never knew you could do this with computers,” that make the entire process rewarding. As a coach, I’m not there to teach, but to encourage, validate, and inspire. I only hope the beginning moments of this Summer of Code captured enough belief in the participants that they’ll want to continue, not only in a classroom setting but on their own, for my direction and motivation can only extend so far, it’s within the home and outside that spirit needs to carry onto and for that, only time will tell.
